While still in Adobe Illustrator, I select the picture and choose Live Paint, then with the Live Paint bucket I start to choose my colors and fill in the Klown.

I take a background then (In this case the drawing was done by my wife Kim Smith, you can see her Tumblr @ www.kimsmithsloveart.tumblr.com) and copy the Klown over to the background on a new layer. I add a simple circle shape under the Klown for a shadow and I’m done. Wow, I make it look easy! Well if I can do it, it is easy!

First I scan the original sketch and import it into Adobe Photoshop CS4. After adjusting brightness levels if necessary and changing the size to a smaller picture, I save it. I then open it in Adobe Illustrator and and choose Live Trace, then I change the tracing parameters to simple trace (that erases the background so I can easily put my own background behind the picture.
